Special Olympics Alberta - Calgary has been providing sport programs to individuals with an intellectual disability in Calgary for over 39 years. The programs enrich their lives and help them develop skills not just in sport, but in their everyday life.  The COVID pandemic has drastically affected our organization, the programs we offer and our fundraising to continue to provide our members with ways to stay connected together, and engaged in their physical and mental well being.  We know these hard times have affected us all, but if you are able to support the Special Olympics movement, we would thank you for doing so. The funds raised will go towards our programming.  Thank you for being part of making a difference in the lives of our athletes.

Due to the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and to comply with all provincial health authority orders, Alberta Fire Fighters have had to make the difficult decision to cancel their annual in-community Rooftop Campout campaigns in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC) this year.  Unfortunately, the needs of those impacted by neuromuscular disorders cannot be cancelled.   MDC  is very fortunate to have Fire Fighters on the frontlines in Alberta, as well as on the frontlines for MDC clients.  Since 1954 fire fighters have been  ‘shaking the boot’ for MDC  and Canadians impacted by neuromuscular disorders.  To date, Fire Fighters have raised  close to $100M  to provide  MDC  programs and services including;  replying to  complex inquiries related to COVID-19,  providing  emotional support,  supporting  grants  for research initiatives  to find a cure,  and  funding  essential equipment.    This year,  due to COVID-19,  MDC  Fire Fighter revenue has seen an over 75% decrease. While they may not be able to be out in public in the usual way,  Alberta Fire Fighters want to maintain the tradition of helping to fill the boot in 2021 by raising funds ‘virtually’ this year. By purchasing your 50/50 raffle ticket today, you will be helping Fire Fighters continue over 65 years of tradition and support for those impacted by over 160 neuromuscluar disorders in Alberta.  7,493 Tickets printed. Boot Scootin Boogie Dance Club is incorporated as a Not for Profit under the Society Act. I started our Society 5 years ago this March. I am known for being a dynamic lady with a gigantic heart that shows in my passion for dance, live music and my Community.  Although Boot Scootin Boogie is thought to be a Bar, it is not. In fact it is a family friendly venue where for all ages to learn dance and participate in special events of various kinds hosted by a variety of Community members, including Boot Scootin’ Boogie Dance Club. It is a Community Recreation Facility and is available for anyone to rent as well! We support Live Music as one of our namesakes and in honour of the Venue we rent having been the BEST LIVE ENTERTAINMENT VENUE in Alberta for 31 years! COVID has had a negative impact on many businesses and families. We have felt that hit also. Boots doors closed in March 14th, opened on Sept. 25 at 1/4 capacity and only 2-3 days of the week, only to close again Nov. 13th due to COVID mandates.  The icing on the cake is that in October a small fire by a third party, who has since been ordered to not return to the premises, closed our kitchen, the only source of income we could have had during COVID. The expenses of re-opening and having to re-ceritfy the kitchen with no income has put additional pressure on this Not for Profit. Unfortunately the commercial stove was not salvageable and now we also have to replace that.  In spite of the fire and COVID shut downs, we know there are others in greater need so with the help of others we have decided to help our Community by creating our very own Lunch Kitchen called, “Let's Eat.” It is a Lunch Kitchen providing free meals to those in need. We are starting on Saturdays only but plan to expand this to daily as soon as donations and preparedness permit. If you have been hit hard by COVID, as so many have, we invite you down to join us to donate time, food items or monetary means.  With schools closing due to covid many kids that had free meals through the school are left out. We are gravely concerned about this! We are stepping up and they can get the meal at Boot Scootin Boogie every Saturday for now but hopefully soon it will be daily. Our ultimate goal is to have it daily but to do that we need funds to replace the stove and to help supplement the food donation. Your help is appreciated. Anything from $5 to $500 helps greatly!
